Unique experience. We toured the grounds with a very knowledgeable guide, a Traverse City native who studies it. There is a benefactor who bought the facility, is restoring, and developing into a shopping, dining, and real estate experience. Very reasonable price.

I highly recommend the tours offered at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. It's one of my favorite locations in all of Michigan and a unique experience. Our tour guide grew up in the area and had personal stories of living next to the asylum when it was still in operation. She also shared fascinating history about the hospital and the time in which it operated, and we got to walk through the underground steam tunnels!

The Village at Grand Traverse Commons is a must-see, especially for history lovers. Once a historic institution for people with mental illness, it has been beautifully transformed while preserving its incredible architecture and rich history. Strolling the grounds feels like stepping back in time, with unique shops, restaurants, and fascinating stories around every corner. Definitely worth a visit if you appreciate historic landmarks and stunning architecture. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The 2-hour tour is fascinating, and Clover was an excellent guide! She was informative, passionate, and funny as she talked us through the history of the property and what life looked like at various moments throughout its existence. We’re TC locals and come to the Commons all the time, but there’s so much we didn’t know! Grateful to Clover and this tour for teaching us about the history of this magical place. (And thanks to the Minervinis for restoring it!)
